BPG (Back Painted Glass)

Back painted glass is any form of clear glass that is painted from the back side and viewed from the front side, or "first surface" side. Back painted glass is widely used for architectural spandrel glass, colored glass walls for interior glazing, colored glass back splashes, glass markerboards and dry erase boards, colored glass counter tops, shower walls, artistic glass, auto glass, marine glass, aero space glass, and more.

A recent new use to back painted glass uses 6mm Clear Low Iron Glass, "back painted" in a variety of colours (chosen by the consumer) and used as place mats for table settings, desktop protectors, table tops, and other creative solutions.

Tempered Glass

After a little digging and researching, I found out it is made by heating the glass and then cooling it very quickly. This type of glass breaks differently than normal glass, creating more rounded edges of glass pieces instead of jagged shards that regular glass creates. A tempered glass protector is a multi-layered screen protector. It has a bottom layer of absorbent silicon, PET film and an optically clear adhesive tempered glass and oleophobic coating in that order. Tempered glass is up to five times stronger than normal glass.

Heat Strength Glass

Heat-strengthened glass is a semi-tempered glass which retains the normal properties of ordinary float glass. It is similar to tempered glass except that the cooling is done slower than toughened glass but faster than annealed glass. Heat-strengthened glass is about twice as strong as annealed glass.

    Characteristics of Heat Strengthened Glass:
  • Heat-strengthened glass provides higher resistance to thermal stress when compared to annealed glass.
  • When producing Heat-strengthened laminated glass in comparison with Tempered Laminated glass, Heat-strengthened glass allows the interlayer to laminated glass to adhere more evenly because of a flatter finish surface.

Insulated Glass(DJU)

An insulating glass unit commonly consists of two (sometimes more) panes of glass separated by a spacer material and sealed together at the edge. The insulating airspace is filled with air or a noble gas, such as argon or krypton inside. Each glass pane has two surfaces, so typical double-paned IGUs have four surfaces.
Spacers, features a unique design that creates an effective thermal barrier at the edge of the IGU to help reduce conducted heat loss through the window, making them stronger and better at retaining insulating gas than many conventional designs.

Figure Glass

The elaborate patterns found on figured (or 'Cathedral') rolled-plate glass are produced in a similar fashion to the rolled plate glass process except that the plate is cast between two rollers, one of which carries a pattern. On occasion, both rollers can carry a pattern. The pattern is impressed upon the sheet by a printing roller which is brought down upon the glass as it leaves the main rolls while still soft.

The glass used for this purpose is typically whiter in colour than the clear glasses used for other applications.

This glass can be laminated or toughened depending on the depth of the pattern to produce a safety glass.

Mirror Glass

A mirror is an object that reflects light in such a way that, for incident light in some range of wavelengths, the reflected light preserves many or most of the detailed physical characteristics of the original light.

The most familiar type of mirror is the plane mirror, which has a flat screen surface. Curved mirrors are also used, to produce magnified or diminished images or focus light or simply distort the reflected image.

Mirrors are commonly used for personal grooming or admiring oneself (where they are also called looking-glasses), decoration, and architecture. Mirrors are also used in scientific apparatus such as telescopes and lasers, cameras, and industrial machinery. Most mirrors are designed for visible light.

Wired Glass

Wired glass is a type of glass into which a wire mesh is embedded during production. Wired glass has an impact resistance similar to that of normal glass, but in case of breakage, the mesh retains the pieces of glass. This product is traditionally accepted as a low-cost fire-resistant glass. Wired glass can be tinted by aerosol or electricity. Common colours are golden-yellow, green, light blue and violet-rose.

Wired glass is manufactured primarily as a fire retardant, with wire mesh inlaid in the glass to prevent it from shattering and breaking out under stress or when exposed to high temperatures. With the window intact, the glass keeps the fire at bay, protecting those on the other side from the harmful effects of smoke and flame.

Designer Glass

Designer glass is an item that is made, generally as an artwork for decoration but often also for utility, from glass, sometimes combined with other materials.

Techniques include stained glass windows, leaded lights (also called leadlights), glass that has been placed into a kiln so that it will mould into a shape, glassblowing, sandblasted glass, and copper-foil glasswork.

In general the term is restricted to relatively modern pieces made by people who see themselves as artists who have chosen to work in the medium of glass and both design and make their own pieces as fine art.

Reflective Glass

Reflective glass is glass that has been treated with a metallic coating to allow it to reflect heat. It is not reflective in the sense that it acts as a mirror, although some products do indeed have a highly reflective surface, but rather in the sense that it reflects radiation rather than absorbing it. This type of glass is used in environmentally friendly construction with the goal of reducing heat gain and loss.

Heat generated inside the building tends to stay in the building when the windows are made from reflective glass, which reduces heating costs. Conversely, heat from the outside stays outside, with the radiation being bounced back by the glass. This keeps the building cool in summer. Some structures that use it may be able to scale down or eliminate their climate control systems and other passive measures.

Solar Control Glass

Solar control glass is a hi-tech product developed by the glass industry to allow sunlight to pass through a window or façade while radiating and reflecting away a large degree of the sun’s heat. The indoor space stays bright and much cooler than would be the case if normal glass were used.

Solar control glass is not necessarily coloured or mirrored glass, although such finishes can be applied for aesthetic purposes if desired. It incorporates invisible layers of special materials on the glass which have the dual effect of allowing sunlight in, while repelling solar heat. Solar control glass units are typically doubleglazed, which means they also insulate well.

Tinted Glass

The glass used for windows in buildings, homes, and cars, while offering the advantage of letting light in, often compromises the privacy that the occupants desire, and can also let in more than the desired amount of heat. Tinted glass. This term refers to any glass that has been treated with a material such as a film or coating that reduces the transmission of light through it.

Another popular use of tinted glass is in windows of homes and commercial buildings. Residential glass tinting is much easier to do than automotive tinting. It can even be done by the homeowner himself, with some practice. Glass in homes that is tinted serves many practical purposes, such as limiting ultraviolet light transmission through windows to reduce the fading of furniture and carpet.

Float Glass

Float glass is manufactured using a melt process whereby recycled glass, silica sand, lime, potash and soda are melted in a furnace and floated onto a bed of molten tin.

The molten mass solidifies slowly while flowing over the bed of molten tin, after which it is annealed to remove stresses induced during the cooling process.

Annealing also allows the glass to reach a more stable state resulting in a higher density and higher refractive index.

Frosted Glass

Frosted glass is produced by the sandblasting or acid etching of clear sheet glass. It has the effect of rendering the glass translucent by scattering of light during transmission, thus blurring images while still transmitting light.

    Applications:
  • To obtain visual privacy while admitting light.
  • Decorative patterns may be imposed upon otherwise plain glass by using wax or other inhibitors to retain transparent areas.
  • Frosted glass in light bulbs is used for evenly distributing the light from the bulb's filament across its surface area.
  • To distribute light uniformly in a photographic contact printer.
  • To create an airtight seal in tubes.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by an interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), between its two or more layers of glass.

Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered and also for architectural applications. Skylight glazing and automobile windshields typically use laminated glass. In geographical areas requiring hurricane-resistant construction, laminated glass is often used in exterior storefronts, curtain walls and windows.
